Focus on progress, not perfection

Many autistic people are perfectionists. This can help us achieve amazing things, but it can also lead to anxiety and being too hard on ourselves. As a parent, it can be tough watching your child doubt their abilities—especially when other parents proudly share their children's achievements.

But it doesn’t have to feel this way. Instead of focusing on what your child isn’t doing, celebrate what they are doing. Every step forward is progress, and sharing these wins with family and friends helps them understand both the challenges and the achievements.

Notice when your child tries something new or handles a tricky situation. Enjoy these moments together, and let them know how proud you are. By shifting the focus to progress, you help build a strong, supportive community around them. Over time, these small steps create a path to their future, one that values growth over perfection.
